Joe Hurd is a chef, TV presenter, live host and cooking demonstrator, driven by a love and passion for food that stems from his heritage and continues to grow with his modern and fresh outlook on cooking.

Learn how a unique blend of Italian traditions and a Yorkshire upbringing shaped Joe’s own philosophies, keep track of where and when he’ll be next, and even treat yourself to his personal recipes and food tips, served up regularly on the site.

Joe’s ‘Food Philosophy’

“My recipes are accessible, achievable and written in a way that wont have you reaching for a French dictionary. I write my own recipes and they are built on a foundation of research, history, science and extensive kitchen time.

Food should be undemanding. I don’t like recipes that are bewildering and require a small bank loan to meet the cost of the ingredients.

I also don’t like fuss in the kitchen; I can’t stand false promises of a dish being the “best you have ever tried” with photos of food that just aren’t realistic. Food should be authentic and honest, and that’s why I take pride in my “Blue Collar Cooking” style.

I grew up in a working class town, in an immigrant Italian family from Calabria, so I am not surprised I ended up with this approach.

I own one chopping board, a knife and a few pans. I live a simple life and aside from a few special ingredients, I shop at my local supermarket.

Most importantly, I think that no matter how big or small the plate, the amount of people at the table or the quality of the ingredients, the process is an occasion.

You sit, you taste, you think, you eat. And repeat.”

Unplugged kitchen is about unlocking everyone’s cooking potential. It’s a stripped down and universal approach to food, cooking and recipes that doesn’t come with a heaped helping of complication, necessary skill or expense.

From ingredients sourced at the local garage, to food and lifestyle hacks picked up whilst working in some of London’s top restaurants, it shows a wide range of ways to make humble ingredients make a big impact on your life.

Unplugged is about switching off the noise; helping you avoid the expensive equipment, fads and hard-to-source ingredients.
